Distillation Columns

Distillation columns for industrial chemical plants

The distillation column or fractional plate distiller is a piece of equipment used in distillation processes to separate two or more substances in a liquid mixture. The distillation method exploits the difference in the boiling points of the substances involved to achieve fractioning.

There are various types of column distillers and we can identify the most suitable system for your process and needs.

Over Srl’s team specialises in chemical plants and machines for the treatment and processing of chemical-physical substances. Commission our company with the design and manufacture of custom-made, high-performance distillation columns.

How do they work?

Distillation columns are used to separate the various components contained in a mixture. Fractioning takes place by exploiting the boiling point difference of the different compounds.

More information

The liquid mixture to be distilled, consisting of components with different boiling points, is introduced into the distillation column. The column usually consists of plates or trays, each of which serves as a distillation stage. During the process, the mixture is heated, generating vapours that rise through the column.

The components of the mixture with lower boiling points tend to vaporise more easily and rise more rapidly through the column than those with higher boiling points. The vapours are then condensed into liquid, thus creating a separation between the different mixture components.

Configurations and models

There are several types of distillation columns, each designed for specific separation and purification needs. They include:

Find out models
  • Plate columns: these use horizontal plates or trays to facilitate the exchange of matter between the liquid and gas phases.
  • Bell-shaped columns: these have bell-shaped devices to facilitate contact between rising and falling fluids.
  • Columns with valves: these use valves to control the flow of liquid and gas through the column.
  • Filling columns: these contain filling material to provide an extended surface for the exchange of matter between phases.
  • Weir columns: these are characterised by a continuous flow of liquid down the column walls.
